The King is the most important piece on the board. When he is trapped, his whole army loses. The King can move one square in any direction. The King may never move into check, that is, onto a square attacked by an opponents piece.

Opposite is an example of the King taking a piece, also an animated King showing you in which direction and how far it can go.
