| There is a place called Fairyhaven where all the fairies live. They have little fairy houses and gardens where the flowers sing lovely songs all day. They are ruled by the beautiful Fairy Queen who can change the color of the sky and make clouds into different shapes. Each fairy is given a magic wand when she learns how to do the job that the Fairy Queen gives her. Some fairies get easy jobs like turning teeth into money; all they have to do is wait for little boys and girls to put their teeth under their pillows at night and say the magic words...and poof! they wake up with money underneath their pillows! Some fairies have the hardest job of all, these are the ones that decide to become Sleepy-Time Fairies. These fairies help little boys and girls go to sleep at night because little boys and girls have busy days. They have to brush their teeth and put on their clothes and go to school to learn their numbers.. and they have to eat their vegetables. They also play with their toys, take baths, and ask mommies and daddies lots of questions! They do all the things little boys and girls do. Sometimes they love to do these things so much that they forget about wanting it to be nighttime so it can be tomorrow. For Sleepy-Time Fairies, their work is hard.... Sherry Fairy hadnt gotten her magic wand yet. She wanted it so much, but try as she might she couldnt get the little boys and girls to go to sleep. This is so hard, she cried! Sherry had made so many mistakes. She had spilled her sleepy- time dust in the garden, putting all the singing flowers to sleep so that no songs were sung the whole day....another time she was so nervous that she forgot to take her sleepy-time dust with her. Sherry Fairy just knew in her heart that she could be a Sleepy-Time Fairy.... One day the queen of all fairies, the Fairy Queen, came to visit. Sherry Fairy, you have to be able to put children to sleep at night so they can have a good tomorrow. I know you love little children so I'm counting on you tomorrow, and besides this is the last chance I can give you. Good luck she said, as she flew back to the Star Dust Palace with her rainbow wings. So Sherry Fairy spent her day getting ready for the big night. I don't want to be a Tooth-Fairy or a Story-Fairy, she said. I know I can do it. Sherry fixed her hair and polished her wings, and as the day passed she began to feel better and better. When the time came she gathered her lullabies and star dust so she could present herself to the Fairy Queen. The Fairy Queen was sitting on her throne with a stardust crown on her head. She said.. Sherry Fairy this is your time, do well tonight. Then the Fairy Queen did something totally unexpected... she bent her head to touch her check to Sherry Fairys cheek, and then she winked. She really wants me to do well, Sherry Fairy thought to herself as she left the palace. And I will! Sherry Fairy went back to the house were she was supposed to go, just as a mother was putting her son to bed. The mother was just starting to read to him when Sherry Fairy sat on the pillow next to his head! She opened up her lullabies and sang the sleepy-time song in his ear... and at just the right time, she blew the sleepy-time dust in his face. She watched the little boys eyes grow heavy and she gently brushed his eyelids with her soft, soft wings until they closed in sleep. I did it! Sherry fairy laughed and smiled. And even in his sleep, the little boy smiled too, for he heard her laughter in his dreams. Sherry Fairy returned to Fairyhaven and went straight to the palace where the Fairy Queen waited. She bowed her head before the Fairy Queen and said I did it, your majesty! The little boy was asleep and in dreamland almost before I knew it. The Fairy Queen smiled and said children are easy to do, because they believe in us. Why do you think he smiled? I have something that belongs to you. Take this magic wand, and may all your children have pleasant dreams. So Sherry Fairy left the Star Dust Palace to go home and rest. She was very happy that she finally had her magic wand and was a real Sleepy- Time Fairy at last. Soon she will be visiting more children singing lullabies, waving her magic wand and giving children laughter in their sweetest dreams..... by Catherine Short Copyright 2002 Dedicated to Isaiah and Steven: ~Sleep in peace.. and follow your dreams~ |
