- early prediction of economically important traits of dairy cattle;

- genetic evaluation of dairy cattle using BLUP method (sire model, animal model, multitrait BLUP);
- estimation of genetic parameters ((co-)variance components, heritability, repeatability, genetic and environmental correlations) using modern methods (REML etc.);
- genetic analysis of populations (relationships between animals and their groups, inbreeding, inbreeding depression, crossbreeding efficiency etc.);
- selection of dairy cattle in conditions of low-input production;
- development of software for on-farm dairy recording.
Developed and implemented:
- methods and significant models to predict milk yield and other economically important traits on the basis of exterior, histological and other indicators of heifers;
- estimation of breeding values of sires and cows with BLUP method;
- breeding programs for breeds and herds;
- national standard of Ukraine "Cattle. Sires. Estimation of breeding value with method BLUP";
- national standard of Ukraine "Cattle. The methods of evaluation of productivity and breeding value of heifers and pregnant heifers";
- ways of improvement of dairy breeds and increasing productive traits using relationships between them and controlled genetic and non-genetic factors.
Perspective directions of researches are:
- further improvement of genetic evaluation procedures for dairy cattle;
- investigation of genetic relationships between milk production, functional traits (reproduction, productive life, diseases etc.) and milk quality traits;
- comparative assessment of influence of basic genetic and non-genetic factors on dairy cattle in conditions of conventional and low-input production systems;
- development of breeding programs for dairy cattle in conditions of low-input production.
Scientific and technical base of Laboratory:
Breeding organization laboratory has all necessary specialized laboratory-research equipment and devices, information-computer and software maintenance for successful performance of tender's research works, including profile laboratory premises, equipped with special devices, and 6 of computers with the specialized software, joined to local network.
Animal Breeding Laboratory of Institute of Animal Science of Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences proposes collaboration with scientific consortiums in area of animal breeding, modelling, predicting traits, biological researches and statistical analysis.
