THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN GUJRAT RIOTS MJMC,24-M.C., Aftab Hall, A.M.U., Aligarh

Did Media reports incite communal violence in Gujrat?

The government alleged that news networks kept showing visuals of the carnage, thus inciting the violence. I am agreeing with the accusation to some extent that local media was responsible for burning anti-social element to come out and loot. Local newspapers particularly "Sandesh" and "Gujrat Samachar" reported how markets were deserted, acted as an invitation to the looters. After the program Narendra Modi said that media has played a very negative role by giving coverage to only violence and destructive elements and has  completely ignored any good work that is being done. Does any one seriously believe that telecasting of burning of shops and houses motivate people immediately rush out? I do not agree with the view that media inflamed the communal passion. Media's work is to report what has happened and it did the same in Gujrat.

Houses being burnt people being killed women being raped by mobs. Media holds a mirror to the society and if the reflection is being the ugly one, it can do little about it. I think media should be given the credit for playing the role of 'watch dog'. Media did not ignored the Godhra tragedy nor did it sideline the atrocities Indulged by VHP activists. In the town and cities in the Gujrat. Infact we must think electronic media for exposing shallowness of our politicians. Earlier we thought that politicians were architects of our future, now when they stand naked before us. As the barbarism goes on all around, we know the true worth. Being the first televised riot, I was shocked to see the naked dance of barbarism. As Prem Shankar Jha in outlook, March 8 "over 5000 Muslims, who lived, worked, loved, hated, worried, laughed and cried, have had their lives snatched away. Mosques and Dargahs were razed and replaced by statues of Hanuman and Saffron flags". Today out of pain and anguish my heart bleeds and weeps for all the Muslims who lost life. One song I often sang with pride and conviction. The words of song are : SARE JAHAN SE ACHCHA HINDUSTAN HAMARA.  It is the song which I will never sing again.
