1.What is the W3C World Web Consortium? (http://www.w3.org)

W3C is a forum for information, commerce, communication, and collective understanding The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international consortium where Member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards. W3C's mission is:To lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term growth for the Web.

2. Terms

a. Cyberspace
Cyberspace is where floods of information resource can be found through computer networks.

b. download
Getting the data or files to your computer from other computer.

c. upload
Getting the data or files for other computer from your computer.

d. GIF (Graphic Interchange Format)
One type of format for image files. Graphic files used in internet. They are suitable for images that have large areas of same color. GIF is commonly used because it��s smaller quicker to be download.

e. JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
Another type of format for image files. JPG is designed for photographic images which works well on photographs, naturalistic artwork, and similar material. But no so well on lettering, simple cartoons or line drawing. It only handles still images. So JPG is preferred to GIF for photographic images.

f. PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
PNG is Graphics files that has improved than JPG or GIF format. It is to compress images, minimizing the size in bytes but not lowering the quality of the image. It has several features that JPG doesn��t have. 254 levels of transparency, more control over image brightness, and support for more than 256 colors.

g. login (as a noun and a verb)
Noun: login for the purpose of access to a computer. (=just connecting to your computer)
Verb: connecting to a computer by typing in your id or password.

h. mailing lists (listserv and majordomo)
A list of email addresses. Can send email to one address and subscribe to others in the mail list who have similar interest. People who have different kinds of email access can easily get involved in discussion.

Listserv:
most common type of mailing list. In other words, it��s a small program that automatically redistributes emails to names on a mailing list. Listserv will automatically add the name and distribute future e-mail postings to every subscriber.

Majordomo:
When e-mail is addressed to a majordomo mailing list, it is automatically broadcast to everyone on the list. The result is similar to a newsgroup or forum, except that the messages are transmitted as e-mail and are therefore available only to individuals on the list.

i. newsgroups
What are they? How are newsgroups different from mailing lists? A group sharing information. ( a forum) Each one is an area on the Internet that allows users to post messages and reply to other users. A discussion about a particular subject can be redistributed through Usenet.

j. packet switching
The type of network made up with small units of data (packet) which are routed through a network based on the destination address contained within each packet. Breaking communication down into packets allows the same data path to be shared among many users in the network.

k. router
A device to connect two or more networks. Router receive a packet of data, filter them and gives final destination using the best route.

l. cookie
Cookies are small data files written to your hard drive by some Web sites when you view them in your browser. These data files contain information the site can use to track such things as passwords, lists of pages you've visited, and the date when you last looked at a certain page.Cookies might contain information such as login or registration information, online "shopping cart" information, user preferences, etc.

m. IP address
A numeric address that is given to servers and users connected to the Internet

n. Domain name
The address or URL of a particular Web site, It is a text name for numeric IP address.

o. Head or header of an HTML document
The one or two lines at the very top of the html document. Once you specify the text in the header, for later ones it is automatically inserted.

p. nesting
Embedding one object in another object of the same type. Nesting is quite common in programming (different logic structures sequence, selection and loop are combined)

q. PDF document (Portable Document Format)
A way of formatting documents in such a way that they can be viewed and printed on multiple platforms using the freely available Adobe Acrobat reader.

r. query
A question or request to find a particular file, Web site, record, or set of records in a search engine or database.

s. query box
a box where you enter your query
