Ewoun
Ewoun, pronounced by saying 'ee' then 'own' with a 'wh' sound before the 'own,' is the god of the sea for the Rospians in the world of Oceanus, the world where the action is in Linda's Chronicles, which you can learn more about here.
Anyways, Ewoun is the god of the sea. Rather, he is the sea, the ocean. "Ewoun" directly translates to 'ocean' in Rospian. There are many myths about Ewoun, many of which I have not yet invented, but do allow me to copy and paste a couple from my story.
He often saw beautiful maidens, and would turn into a dashing, beautiful stallion. The woman would find the horse so beautiful, she would simply have to mount it and ride it. Ewoun, as the horse, would run to the sea as fast as waves come crashing in, and the maiden would be his. This was mans excuse for not letting women ride horses, but it stopped a few centuries ago.
Many thousands of years ago, when Ewoun was young, he and his mother lived together in a river. They lived in a beautiful house, surrounded by the green plants that live in rivers. When the winter came, the river froze, and the house was crushed under the weight. Ewoun was out searching for food, and when he came back, his mother was dead. He refused to eat, drink, or even protect himself from the cold, and he almost died when an oracle told him that he must find a woman to take care of him. Then, no one knew that Ewoun was to become Lord of Sea and Land, so when he asked girls to marry him, they refused.
One girl, called Vari'ann, took pity on him. She was not very pretty, so Ewoun never though to ask her for her hand in marriage. He ended up living with her, and one day, she told him that she loved him. Ewoun was surprised, of course, but he realized that all he needed was her, and he had found a woman to take care of him long ago. He decided to make a new way to bond a man and woman, which was a Vow, rather than the ceremonies that were used then. He told Vari'ann of his plan, and she loved him so much she did what he asked.
Thus, the first true marriage vow was taken, and ever since, when one marries in Rospa, one takes the same vows that Ewoun and Vari'ann took thousands of years ago. That is also why Ewoun is invincible and is supposed to live forever, he has Vari'ann to protect and heal him.
...ever since the plague, no one believes in honor anymore.
The plague occurred about seventy years ago, it was said to be caused by some Paparnese sailors that arrived shortly before it began. It was a terrible disease; usually it killed the victim in less than ten days.
Everyone prayed fervently to Ewoun, believing he would cause the illness to be stopped, but he did nothing. When a doctor realized that eating a certain plant for three days in a row could stop the plague, everyone thanked him instead of Ewoun, and decided that Ewoun did not exist. Ever since, the monks have remained locked in their beautiful monasteries, only opening the doors to those in need or other believers. Many do not believe in Ewoun, although they still use his name in oaths, but there are a few believers. I am not sure if Ewoun is there, perhaps he has died, as all beings must, or is in some type of divine slumber. There is no way to tell, so I listen to everyone and make my own conclusions from everyone elses. I tend to believe that he is there, somewhere, because he was there once, I'm sure, or how else would we have gotten the idea for Ewoun?
So as you can see in the last excerpt, there are some issues with Ewoun's existence. They aren't sure who he is if he is there, and I'm considering making a civil war to put in the story. If you think this is an incredibly good or bad idea, I have an email address: [email protected]
