Herr Juergen Ladebeck of Magdeburg was kind enough to supply the map below from Peter Wittig, Arbeitskreis Saechsische Militaergeschichte e.V. (Dresden, 2004). In great detail, the map shows precisely where the 329th regiment crossed the Elbe, and the position of the American units at 1:00 pm on April 13, 1945. Wittig's book also reports the German counter-attack from Gutergluck. In the course of the attack, a German assault gun was destroyed at the corner of Walternienburg, and Herr Ladebeck believes this is likely the tank mentioned in Sgt. Arnold's memoirs (private communique, April 18, 2005).

Sgt. Arnolds AT-Company would have been part of the 1st battalion of the 329th, marked clearly on the map as 1/329. The red dot shows precisely where Dad's gun was located when it was hit. For more on the events at Walternienburg, click on "
