| First thing , let me tell you a little bit about myself. My real name is Tom Kamrowski and I'm 36 years old. I live in Western Michigan and work as a process technician for a company that produces turbine engine and structural components for the aerospace industry. Before that I spent 13 years in the United States Marine Corps and I currently continue to serve on a part-time basis as an Engineer NCO with the Michigan Army National Guard. I am married and have four children. My Wife works as a manager for Applebee's Restaurant Corporation. Besides metal detecting, I enjoy hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and cycling. I guess you could say that I'm kinda "outdoorsy" | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Now for the Metal Detecting. You may ask yourself why somebody wants to spend all that time swinging some strange gadget around all day looking geeky. Well, the answers are many. The main reason most people metal detect is to mainly find old coins and jewelry. This group is the most common and are referred to as "Coinshooters". Along with these are also found other small relics such as old pocketwatch cases and parts (sometimes even whole watches!), old trade tokens from bygone retailers in an area, old small toys such as cars and lead soldiers, old buttons, etc. The list goes on and on. Some also hunt beaches, shallow water, and even underwater. These individuals are looking for mainly rings and other types of jewelry lost by beachgoers. Another type of hunting favored by detectorists is searching sites of old miltary encampments from the Civil War and older. These are searching for bullets, uniform buttons and insignia, and various lost and castoff items of the day-to-day lives of the soldiers who used that camp. These are known as "relic hunters". Other relic hunters favor sites that were inhabited during colonial times. Finally, we have the last group. These are the prospectors, also called "nugget hunters". These detectorists can be found near old minesites or out in the wilds searching for gold nuggets. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I'm sure you have heard or read about somebody with a metal detector who trespassed on private, state or federal property, dug up and removed items, and then left a lot of unfilled holes. I must assure you right now that these people are in the minority. They are not detectorists but rather are criminals. Responsible metal detecorists follow a code of ethics that specifically prohibits such acts. You will be able to read the code of ethics in some of the links I will provide below. I will also supply links to the forums that I participate in where hundreds of detectorists will be happy to answer any questions that you may have about our hobby. Many of these detectorists also have links to their own webpages that are much more interesting and informative than my own. I also would be happy to answer any questions you may have by E-mail if you wish. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
