Herstory
~The Legacy Begins
On November 12th, 1922 at the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana seven exceptional women gathered together. These women were Mary Lou Allyson Gardner Little, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, Cubena McClure, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, and Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford and they all shared the same vision; to create an organization dedicated to sisterhood, scholarship, and service. Thus Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc was founded. Today, we have grown to over 77,000 members with over 400 chapters in the United States, Bahamas, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands & Germany. Our service initiatives encompass many .programs including Big Book Bag, Mwanamugimu Essay Contest, Program for Africa, and Wee Savers to name a few.  Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. also works with several outside organizations and has two affiliates, the Rhoer Club and the Philo Club

The Gamma Kappa chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. was founded on the campus of California State University Long Beach on July 11th, 1964 by eight dedicated women. These Sorors were Yvonne Rose-Carter, Gloria Macklin, Joysteen Shepard-Toliver, Yvonne Davis, Barbara Keesee, Mattie Parmes, Norma Wills, and Karen Martin-Howard. Gamma Kappa has the distinction of being the first Black Greek Organization to establish a chapter on the campus of Long Beach State and from 1964 has inducted new members until 2000. In Spring 2005 Gamma Kappa was reactivated by its advising chapter, Gamma Tau Sigma. Gamma Kappa participates in the national programs of the sorority as well as campus events and several community service projects which include canned good drives, feeding the homeless, high school outreach programs, and bone marrow drives
