Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded  at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 12, 1922.  This sorority is the ONLY African-American sorority to be founded on a predominately white campus.  The other three were  founded at Howard Universityin Washington, D.C.  By this, it was evident that the
founding of Sigma Gamma Rho was the start of an
extraordinary organization.

Our seven founders were like no other women.  These women faced many hardships to overcome all obstacles set before them during this time.  They believed that through hard work
and Greater Service, they would achieve
Greater Progress.

All of our founders were educators.  They started a legacy that still thrives today in society.  Our organization is the youngest, and smallest, African-American sorority.  But that is definitely a good thing to us.  We are an Elite group of sisters who believe in
accepting only the cream of the crop.  We believe in the
quality of our members, not the quantity.

Today, there are over 430 chapters and 72,000 members throughout the world.  And with the strength and guidance that our founders have given us...we stand united to this very day as sisters.
