Our Mission
To actively promote and develop interest for Judo in Singapore.
Our Club History - Abstract taken from Singapore Judo Club 40th Anniversary Magazine 1994
It was in late 1953 that 15 Judo enthusiasts got together and obtained the voluntary service of Mr. Yeo Chiu Ong a 2nd Dan from a Japanese University who started to teach Judo with the 12 Tatamis in the compound of one of the enthusiast's house at Grange Road. As members increased, it was then decided that a bigger space should be sought and a club be formed. Thus in March 1954, the Singapore Judo Club was officially registered and declared opened by Datin Paglar, wife of the late Dato Dr. Paglar. Unfortunately in the late 1955, members began to dwindle and the Club was faced with financial difficulties. At that time the committee members had to maintain the club with their own pocket money and it was not until 1959 that members began to increase again. From then on, many Judo demonstrations were given to the public to popularize the sport. Judo demonstrations were also given in aid of charitable organizations. A 6th Dan Instructor, Mr. Ichijima was engaged from Japan to teach Judo in the Club. At the same time, two voluntary instructors, Mr. T. Ebimoto of Mitsubishi Co. Ltd and Mr. Saito of the Japanese Consulate (both 3rd Dan) also helped to teach and improve the standards of our players. We were also lucky to have the service of Mr. Masami Nishimura (8th Dan) who later became the Club's Technical Adviser.
During all these years many high grade Judokas visited the Club, namely, the late Mr. G. Koizumi (7th Dan) father of British Judo, Mr. Itagaki (9th Dan) of the Kodokan, Mr. K. Ku Do (9th Dan) and Mr. Shiroka (7th Dan) who came to train the members who were selected to represent Singapore in the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. The Club had participated in many International and National Judo Championships. The Club took part in the 1st and 2nd Malaysian Judo Champion-ships and won medals in all the grades. In 1964, two members from our Club represented Malaysia in the Tokyo Olympics and in 1965 five members participated in the SEAP Games. They obtained three medals; one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze. Another member participated in the 4th World Judo Champion-ship held in Brazil in 1965.
In 1965, with Singapore's separation from Malaysia, senior members from the Club organized the Singapore Judo Federation to further promote and develop Judo in Singapore. Since then, several club members have brought glory to Singapore participating in all the SEAP and SEA Games to-date and also in Asian and Olympic Games. Many members have reached high positions and recognition in the International Judo Federation. Several high grade instructors taught Judo to members of the 28th Commonwealth Brigade based in Malacca. Eventually these instructors migrated to New Zealand, Australia, England, Israel and the Middle East to continue for the cause of world development of Judo.
In 1980, the club was relocated from the White House Hotel along Jalan Besar to its current location at Portsdown Road due to urban redevelopment.
