GENERAL ART DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
CLASS EXPECTATIONS
Dear Parents:

Welcome to our new school year and to our new families. I hope everyone had an opportunity to look at the art department web site. I encourage you to look at it often because I will be putting information pertaining to classes.

The art lessons are based on the basic principals and elements of art. These are broken down and taught at different levels according to each grade.  Since art is a process, basic skills are repeated in different projects and some lessons are integrated with other subjects. Lessons include art history, historical periods, and artists. I am planning an array of assignments using various mediums to provide the opportunity for students to experience different techniques, methods, and tools.   My goal is to expose children in many areas of fine arts through various mediums. Through art education, students can learn skills that carry on to other subjects, and beyond the classroom environment.

I teach art to your child (kindergarten to 8th grade) once a week for one period.  The majority of the projects are completed in school over several class periods but occasionally some projects are assigned to be completed at home. As in other subjects, when homework or a project is assigned, students are expected to complete it. I do encourage everyone to practice drawing as much as possible. Students will be graded weekly on class work, conduct and projects. All assignments will receive a grade. Each project is based using the following criteria:

           Creativity , magination , Neatness & organization
           Use/Handling/Care of  materials
            Following Direction
            Use of Time
            Clean-up procedures

In order to keep the uniforms clean in art class, I suggest for your child to use an old shirt (adult large). Grades 3 to 6  are required to bring a sketch book and a sharp pencil to art weekly. The sketch book will be used in class and it is kept in school at all times. Other grades may bring sketch book to art if they wish.  As part of the school supplies I request each grade to bring a roll of paper towel to be used in the classroom. Since space is limited in the classroom I will let your child know when to bring it. In September I ask that 8th grade be the first group to bring it, followed by 7th grade in October and so on.

I am looking forward to teaching art to your child. Feel free to e-mail me at any time via the schools website.

Sincerely,

Kathy Pietri, art teacher
