8th grade memory book

Lets begin by eliminating the title of this project because
this project is about you.  You will work in class throughout the year.

Although I am calling this project a memory book, there will be many ways to present your project, not necessarily in a book form. If you do chose to use a scrapbook, you will be altering in some way.
I have noticed that in the past when students use a scrapbook, they enjoy looking at the book for many years.

To get ideas, go on line and look in Google, images. In search type words such as book or scrap booking. Words such as, altered book, scrapbook, memory album, photo albums, etc. can help you see many examples. Not only will you get ideas for the cover but also on how to decorate your project and pages. You may also find great ideas at www.youtube.com. As always, when looking on the internet, let your families know and be careful when opening a site.

For now, all you need to do is bring a large shoe box to store your materials. Each week you will bring a few items to add in your shoe box. This box will be kept in the art room until the end of the school year. We will start assembling in February 2010.

Make Something Totally Personal

What exactly is altered art? Its merely turning a familiar or found object into an object dart. This can be achieved in many ways by adding paint, papers, charms, ribbon, fibers, and anything else you can think of. The skys the limit. You can alter just about anything a cigar box, wooden box, an old drawer, a lunch box, tin container, or any object that you would like to transform. You may also use an old book, sketch book, or a scrap book binder. Each person will chose something they prefer. Most of all, your work should be neat and you should take your time

An altered book is a perfect place for a collection of wise words and pictures, and other items you may have collected over the years. Pick a theme if you want, or keep it general. You may decide to make this book as part of your past; places you have been, things youve done. You can also make this book as your future, your wishes. This is an especially great theme if you have not collected many things.
Your project should reflect something about you, your friends, your and how you are going to assemble. Keep the pages simple and easy to understand. Dont over-load the page with pictures, stickers, etc. Consider the principles and elements of design when designing your pages.

:
I realize each one of us has collected different things and we have different memories. Some of us will collect many things in the shoe boxes while others very little. When working on this project after February, I will have many things for you to use and many other people will be able to share extras with each other. I would like for you to be open minded and creative when looking for things to glue.

You will be combining various techniques such as scrap booking, altered books, and visual journal. Basically you are going alter art and  have the opportunity to express personal ideas through your art.
Some things you might bring are: stickers, ribbons, laces, awards, letters of recognition, poems, drawings, lyrics, photos, magazine articles and pictures of interest, maps, personal memories, etc. Compile a collection of quotes, lyrics, poems, proverbs or lines from your favorite movie. Decorate a page with a quote you have found on the internet or newspaper/magazine. Add various art papers, charms and embellishments. Use souvenirs from trips, events or that you have collected over the years.
Use your favorite images. These can be in magazines, books, newspapers, the web, etc. If you can't tear the photo out, copy it or print it out, either in black or white or color. The idea is to collect photos that inspire you. Stencils, stickers and many others may be used to add phrases, sentences, etc., to your book.
We will begin working on this project in February. You will work on this project until the end of May.
This project will be displayed at graduation for everyone to view. This project will be something you will you will cherish for many years.

Project Schedule:

*   Bring a shoe box now in September and each week bring a few things to add.
*   Each trimester your box will be checked for grade.

To receive a grade of A on the first trimester you only need to bring at least 25 things.
By the second trimester you will need to have at least 50 things.
We will begin assembling at the beginning of February. This will take a while to complete.

Your work will be graded on:
Overall presentation, craftsmanship, creativity, neatness, time committed to the project (you must work from February to May).

This project will only be worked in class and due on May 25th.

As always, if you have any questions, send me an email or contact me in school.
