Here's my long lost Australian cousin, it's Daniel Jones from Savage Garden.
Daniel: Hey, how are you doing?
Interviewer: I'm doing good, how's the family down under?
Daniel: They're all good, they've all given me their regards to give to you, so they all say hello.
Interviewer: Isn't that nice of them?
Daniel: Yes it is, yes...
Interviewer: Let me ask you, Daniel, speaking of the family, how is the family accepting all of this new found music stardom of yours for the past couple of years?
Daniel: Well, living in their new house, they haven't really got many problems with it...
(laughing)
Daniel: They're just immensely proud of our achievements, you know, Darren as well, my family are incredibly proud of him...umm...you know, we've all adjusted to it now, there was a little stage there where it was a little shaky and what not, all the new things to get used to, but they're really supportive, and really loving and, you know, hey, I couldn't have done it without them, that's for sure.
Interviewer: So Daniel, one of the first things you did was make sure they had a home and everything?
Daniel: Well, yeah, I did actually, it was something that I had always sort of wanted to do, my parents were sort of hard workers, nothing more than sort of school cleaners, no disrespect to school cleaners, but they always, you know, looked out for us three boys so that was the least I could do when I came in that situation.
Interviewer: So now your family, obviously, your mom and your dad worked very hard for every penny, is that carried over to you? Are you pretty careful with money and stuff?
Daniel: I'm extremely careful with money, yeah, umm, I am not tight by any means, but I think, you know, you have to be reasonably smart with it, you know, I know that this industry is so fickle, I know that sometimes, you know, you can be there one minute and not the next, so I'm just trying to be as sensible as I can with it as anyone would.
Interviewer: Boy, it seems like you've got your head on pretty straight there, Daniel.
Daniel: Some days I don't think so, I can tell you that...
Interviewer: Ok, Daniel, let's get to the technical stuff here, the show tonight, you were in the province, I guess, two years ago a tour, right?
Daniel: Yep we were, this tour is a step up, let me say that, the production that we're carrying this time around is far superior, we got some help from some Canadian guys, who helped develop the U2 Popmart tour and the Europa tour, so, we've got a lot of neon lights, a lot of colour, a lot of energy,it's actually a really good show, and so far the audience, especilly in Canada, have been fantastic.
Interviewer: So, Daniel, you and Darren, how much imput do you have in the show or do you have people that do that for you?
Daniel: We try and take on as much as we can, especially on the creative side, the artistic side, you know, we want to be able to portray the band Savage Garden the way we want to portray it, so, you know, we don't say "We can get there and do it all on our own", we get a lot of good help from a lot of talented people, but we try and sort of MAKE it work for ourselves as much as we can.
Interviewer: Now this is really exciting news too, coming up in the middle of next month, you're going to be busy back home, in Australia, with the Olympics!
Daniel: Yeah, we are, we're really looking forward to that one, I mean that's going to be probably one of the highlights of my life in this carrier, it's in Sydney, it's our home country, it's going to be a billion people glued to the tv, we're getting a chance to perform "Affirmation", one of our songs, so it's going to be awesome, really awesome...
Interviewer: Talking about that song, "Affirmation", you must be getting a lot of posiive feedback on the lyrics alone, like what a great song...
Daniel: Yeah, it is very inspiring, and a lot to learn from aswell, just sometimes reasures you, you knoe, how to think, like a little maual there sometimes, so I enjoy reading it.
Interviewer: Ok, well listen, I got a couple of quick questions that I wanna ask you, ok? What is the best thing since you've become well-known, I mean this is your second CD, you're doing pretty good, you're on tour half-way around the world for Heavens' sakes, you're doing ok, what's the best thing about being a well-known music star?
Daniel: Freedom, really, getting to express yourself, you know, I know it's clich, but, doing what you love doing for a living and getting payed for it, that's something special...
Interviewer: Well you can't beat that. Now when you and Darren first started out, would the record companies, or managers, or the guy in the pub down the block try to hold you into doing something that you didn't want to do?
Daniel: Yeah, that's happened, that happens pretty much every other day in anyones carrier, I know, let's say, radio djs can say the same thing, it was one of those things, we got rejected by 140 odd people before 1 person actualy took a chance with us, who's name is Shawn Woodruff, so, you know, the risc-takers are sometimes the people that end up in front and thank God he did that for us...
Interviewer: And he hung in for you, is he still part of the team?
Daniel: Yep, very much so, yep, he takes a lot of our money too...
Interviewer: What's the worst thing about being a well-known music star?
Daniel: Ok, this is contradicting my other answer: losing your freedom, sometimes you don't have as much freedom as you would like, because you are somewhat a slave to your creation, and, you know, you have to give and take for that, and it's a day to day compromise, but sometimes the identity of Savage Garden has become bigger than we have as individuals, so you have to try and balance that out, did that make sence? maybe that's too heavy for afternoon radio.
Interviewer: Oh, no, no, I'm following you here, Daniel. Now this has a follow-up question and for me, obviously, especially in Australia and Canada and in the US, I'm suspecting it's starting, you guys are getting recognised on the street, has there ever been any embarrassing time when someoe has said "Hey! It's Daniel Jones from Savage Garden!"?
Daniel: Yeah, many times, it happens all the time, and it's usually when you're dressed the most daggiest, but, hey, we're human beings, you know, everyone is, so we do our thing and people enjoy that, so it's all I can say...
Interviewer: Have a great show, Daniel!
Daniel: We will do, looking forward to playing, it's gonna be...I don't know, we did Calgary last night and the crowd went off, so hopefully we can expect the same thing here in Edmonton.
Interviewer: And you know what's gonna be so cool? It's the fact that we can see you live here and then in a month we'll see you at the, it's the closing ceremonies at the Olympics, at I right?
Daniel: That's exactly right.
Interviewer: Oh boy, that's just exciting...
Daniel: Yeah, it's gonna be good...
Interviewer: Daniel, we're gonna play "Affirmation" in just a couple of moments, but we're gonna take you back a couple of years now, I know if you know that we have this hootleg piece of music here... Oh, maybe I shouldn't have said anything...Hang on, I'll get publishers name and everything off...
Daniel: Ok, my family just disregarded you now, so you're no longer a relative.
Interviewer: I'm out of the will. we've got "Affirmation" from Savage Garden in just a couple of moments, but a couple of years ago, when you were in Alberta, you guys, we recorded an exclusive version of "I want you I need you" (he got the song title wrong), in the Power Studios and I want to play that right now.

Daniel: Fantastic.
Interviewer: Daniel, good luck and thanks you so much for doing this.
Daniel: Thank you very much, thank you.
