Patrolling
Lifeguards often move about to patrol the pool, rather than remain in a fixed position. The range of patrol must be clearly defined, it must be conducted in a way that lets the lifeguard maintain observation of the pool at all times. Patrolling lifeguards should never turn their backs to the water. The whole patrol range should be covered continuously to ensure full observation and gain the most advantage, stepping back from the edge will allow the lifeguard a very wide field of view. Lifeguards should also glance behind frequently so that surveillance is as comprehensive as possible. Patrolling has several advantages. Lifeguards may find it easier to keep in contact with pool users and prevent accidents if they are patrolling rather than being in a fixed position. Patrolling lifeguards can move quickly to deal with problems or offer assistance to colleagues while still maintaining a view of their zone.
