Despite a satisfactory Free Practice on Friday,Heinz-Harld Frentzen has decided that he is not over his Monaco crash and as a result will not take part in the Canadian Grand Prix.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen didn't feel any immediate ill effects after his accident in Friday's opening practice sessions here in Montreal although he did put his EJ11 into the barrier in the last moments of the second session due to some debris on the track. On Saturday morning he has decided, after talks with the rest of the team, that he will not be taking part in the race and is set to be replaced by the team's test driver, Ricardo Zonta.
Jordan announced this morning that the young Brazilian would take Frentzen's place in today's practice sessions and qualifying while Frentzen flies back to France to undergo further tests. The German suffered a severe crash in Monaco two weeks ago where he hit his head coming out of the tunnel and was forced to cancel testing later the following week.
Ricardo worked late into Friday night with the Jordan engineers to gain a full briefing on the EJ11's set up for the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Zonta, who has played a key role in the testing and development of the Jordan Honda EJ11 all year, worked with Jarno Trulli last week in testing in Magny Cours on set up for the Canadian Grand Prix. 'I am sure it is a big disappointment for Heinz-Harald that he cannot race. I really hope to do a good job for him and the Jordan team. In many ways this is more tough than competing in your first Grand Prix, but I must say I am very excited about getting into the car again to race!'
Medical reports suggest that Frentzen is suffering from eye trouble and loss of balance.
Obviously disappointed, the German commented, 'I wish Ricardo and the team all the best for the rest of the weekend and look forward to being back in the driving seat in Nurburgring.'
