Both Frentzen and Trulli completed a good number of laps, commenting that their EJ11 cars were well balanced, although further work is required to achieve the optimum brake settings for this circuit. Jarno finished the day in 8th with a best time of 1:18.990 completing 48 laps, while Heinz-Harald was a place behind in 9th, his 39 laps producing a best tome of 1:19.057.
Frentzens tyres picked up dirt on his final run in the closing minutes of the second session, causing him to spin into a tyre wall in the first sector. Damage was sustained to the rear bodywork and suspension.
There is still a lot of work to be done to find the best setup according to Jarno. We had a trouble free session and learned a lot about the car and set-up for this circuit, although are struggling to find the best set-up for race conditions. The cars balance is good and I think, as usual, we will be quick during qualifying. Theres still some work to do though to find a more suitable race trim. The new brake ducts we are running work very well, so this is a positive step forward.
Heinz-Harald is happy enough, despite damaging his car in the closing minutes of practice. We had no technical problems today and were making good progress with car set-up until my accident in the closing minutes of the second session. I think my tyres picked up debris from the track, as I didnt break very hard into the corner but lost the rear and spun into the tyre wall backwards causing damage to the rear bodywork and suspension. It happened in exactly the same place where I had my accident in 1999. The cars balance and handling is very good, but we have a bit more work to do to fine tune set-up for the race.
Set up is, as ever, important but special emphasis has to be put on the brakes, as Tim Holloway, Jordans Head of Engineering, explained. Today weve been working through the standard Canadian race preparation and set-up, although this circuit is a bit different in the sense that its very much about the brakes. The track conditions were good today and the tyres appeared consistent. The damage to Heinzs car looks quite extensive so we have a lot of work to do for qualifying tomorrow, but look in good shape in terms of reliability.
