30th July - Alesi to get the number 11 car from Hungary?

The latest rumours from the paddock at the German Grand Prix are suggesting that current Prost driver and Formula One veteran, Jean Alesi, will move to the Jordan team as a replacement for the recently dismissed Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

Apparently, Eddie Jordan has been in contact with Alesi about replacing the German for the remainder of the 2001 season with the chance of a drive for the 2002 season, starting with round thirteen at Hungary.

Eddie and Jean go back a long way. Jean won the F3000 title in a Jordan in 1989 and they have formed a mutual admiration society ever since. Only last year Eddie claimed, "If I had one regret it is that I haven't worked with Jean in Formula One, because I honestly believe I could have turned him into the world champion that he should have been.

Although Alesi is under contract with Prost, reports indicate that due to financial problems in the French outfit the Frenchman hasn't been paid for his services, which now include three points finishes this season. When questioned after this afternoon's German Grand Prix, Alesi was too busy celebrating his sixth placed finish and revealed very little about what was going on between himself and Jordan.

However, he did indicate that there would be something to say in the near future saying "I will announce a little something about my future a little later."

Eddie Jordan, to date, has neither confirmed or denied the rumour, but Alain Prost has said nothing will happen without his say so.
Speaking after the German race he said, "Jean has a contract with us until the end of the season. I am a friend of Eddie Jordan, he has spoken to me and I have said to that it was not possible. I told him that it will not happen without my permission."

Should Alesi be announced as Frentzen's replacement, Ricardo Zonta has been named as potential candidates to take his place at Prost.

With a three week break before the next race in Hungary, fans won't have to wait too long to see if Frentzen's seat is rapidly filled by the Frenchman.
