The sacking of Heinz-Harald Frentzen has unexpectedly made available a top F1 drive for the 2002 season and the managers of potential candidates will now be queuing to speak to Eddie Jordan.
Rumours that put F3 driver, and championship leader, Takuma Sato forward as a possible replacement have been strengthened by his manager, Andrew Gilbert-Scott's enthusiasm for the move.
Honda, who supply Jordan with works engines, have taken a strong interest in the Japanese driver's career to date and the move would go down very well in Japan. This, combined with his successful debut in British Formula 3 and his testing experience with Jordan, and more recently BAR, has placed Sato in the limelight as a possible candidate to take over from Frentzen.
Scott-Gilbert himself has done quite a bit of testing for the Irish team over the years so knows Eddie Jordan of old. "There is a possibility but myself and Eddie have not started talks yet. Our main target is the take the title in F3," he said. "There are four more weekends left, which is eight races, and he has sixty-three points. We have to see how it goes, but I have not really looked into it (the possibility of fulfilling Sato's F3 contract and driving in formula1). Personally, I would love to take this challenge if possible."
He also confirmed that Sato was aware Frentzen had been sacked.
Jordan have so far only confirmed that test driver Ricardo Zonta will take Frentzen's place in Germany, and have made no statements as to who may take the drive for the remainder of the 2001 season, or 2002.
