31st August - Justin Wilson to test next week.

It has been announced that Formula 3000 Champion elect Justin Wilson will test for Jordan at Mugello next week and if he impresses he will be in line to land a 2002 testing role with the Irish team.

The 22 year old Briton, who currently leads the Grand Prix-supporting F3000 Championship and needs just one point this weekend's penultimate round at Spa to be sure of the title, will drive the EJ11 at the Italian circuit next week. He has already visited the Silverstone factory for a seat fitting to ensure the EJ11 can accommodate his massive 6'3" frame.

It is widely known that Jordans title sponsor Benson & Hedges wants a Briton in the team, although it is not yet clear what role Wilson could play. There is a rumour that is Wilson impresses sufficiently, he might take a race seat for 2002, dashing Formula 3 championship leader Takuma Sato's hopes of a seat alongside Fisichella, but a test role seems more likely.

Wilson is the runaway leader of the F3000 Championship in his Nordic Racing-run Lola-Zytek and has also enjoyed backing from Coca Cola and Eurosport, which could do nothing to harm his journey to Formula One.

This test is great news for Jordan. Undoubtedly Wilson is a major talent and the team would benefit from having him under contract. His only obvious drawback seems to be his height - there is not much room is an F1 cockpit for a 5'6" driver, never mind a 6'3" one, but if he fits, he has the ability to go far.
