Friday's free Practise turned out to have more problems than would have been hoped for the jordan Honda team. As a result they didn't manage to do all the set-up work they would have liked, but thing they can make it up before tomorrow's qualifying session. On a more positive note, much time was spent fine-tuning the new traction control systems and no problems were reported.
During the first session, Jarno Trulli experienced a clutch problem after 5 laps and Heinz-Harald Frentzen span on lap 7 causing damage to the rear wing. Neither driver returned to the track during the hour.
The second session proved more productive as the team worked well through the set-up programme, trying to make up for the lost time.
It was a routine Friday practice session working on car set-up," commented Jarno, although I lost the morning session due to a clutch problem. It was very windy on parts of the track this afternoon which affected the handling of the car, so this could explain why the car doesnt seem to be that well balanced at the moment. Well wait and see what the forecast is for tomorrow, but we have quite a bit of work still to do. We made some adjustments to the electronics software to fine tune the traction control.
I made a mistake and went off in the same place twice, so Im clearly not too happy today. Heinz-Harald said. Im trying to find a better set-up to accommodate that particular corner, but we are confident we know our direction for tomorrow. In the second session I had a problem with the gears shifting the wrong way which affected the car on braking and turn-in. We have completed a lot of testing with traction control but it takes time to get used to in the sense that we are learning the advantages it brings in lap times and tyre degradation. All teams know this circuit well from testing here, but you never know exactly what the conditions will be and which direction the wind is blowing, so its still a challenge.
Tim Holloway, Jordans Head of Engineering, summed up the mornings work. The day was made difficult with both drivers losing the first session after only completing two timed laps. The loss of track time has put us slightly behind in our programme so weve got quite a bit of work to do tonight. Otherwise, it was a usual practice day and feel confident we can continue with our strong and consistent performance shown so far this year.
