Newfound Gap to Davenport Gap Shelter - 234.2
miles from Springer Mt. |
| We arrived at Cosby Knob
about 5:30 pm. Tortuga and I shared our hot supper of noodles
mixed with spices and a bullion cube. Then we shared tea with
honey. A cold but great day! There were 7 of us sharing
the shelter. Temperatures dipped again down in the teens.
We snuggled deep into our sleeping bags, and soon nothing was
stirring, only loud snoring drifted through the cold shelter. |
| I met two section hikers
traveling together, going south toward Newfound Gap. One from
PA and Doc G ( for Doctor Glen) from SC. There were two other
male there with Tortuga and myself. We greeted each other over
morning breakfast and discussed the days hike. Tortuga, the
boys, and myself were going North toward Davenport Gap. I left
a little after 9am. knowing that the younger hikers would pass me
quickly. |

The sun was out, the sky was bright blue, the birds
were singing again; as we hiked lower into the Gap the flowers lifted their
petals to the sun, and the snow gave way to a muddy, rocky trail bordered with
green leafed trees and mosses. I arrived at Davenport Gap. I sat
down on a rock to check my map and directions. I saw "Sunflower" parking
at the trail head with her visiting parents. Sunflower and her father were
hiking to Brown Gap. Kathy, Sunflower's mother was my trail angel and
offered me a ride to Mountain Momma's Country Store and hostel. Tonight my
belly's full, my clothes are washed, a soft bed to sleep on, and an end to
another wonderful experience. Good night. |
