Newfound Gap to Pecks Shelter - 214.6
miles from Springer Mt. |
| What did I see?
Absolutely nothing except my feet! The trail leaving Pecks
Corner was covered with rocks and drop offs and water logs. It
looked like river rocks wedged in the path - ankle busters! |
The violets, trout lilies
and shrubs gave in to old man winters, They bowed their heads
weighted down with icy sleet as if saying, "On another sunny day
we'll open out petals, lift up our heads towards the sky, and spread
our blossoms in the warm sun for passersby to see." As I
climbed higher, pine bought, heavy with icy weight, drooped
lower
catching my backpack and pulling me backwards. When I neared
Charlies Bunion, the icy pellets had covered everything. I was
now really alone in a frozen world, The trail that lead around
Charlies Bunion was very narrow, now slick and dangerous. I
remember thinking to myself, "If I want to see a bunion, I will
choose to look at mine and just see Charles Bunion in pictures." |
|
When I looked back where the trail around Charlies
Bunion came out farther north, I saw frozen pines, rocks and twigs against a
cloudy sky. No views for me! I was definitely in the clouds. |
|
By the time I arrived at Pecks Corner, it was almost
7:30pm. and the temperature was falling. Ice and snow had already
accumulated about an inch on the ground Too tired and too cold, I
had warm soup for supper and soon crawled into my sleeping gab with my water
bottles, we socks, wet gloves and down coat. I shook my down sleeping bat;
then, finally as my body warmed, I dozed off to sleep. |
