* - These ranks are all extremely rare. Fleet Admiral (Elect) is a rank given to a select group of Admirals during the selection process to replace a Fleet Admiral. Brevet Admiral, Brevet Vice Admiral, and Brevet Rear Admiral are ranks given temporarily to Vice Admirals, Rear Admirals, and Commodores, respectively, who are acting with the authority of their brevet rank for specified duties. The rank of Flag Officer is a strictly honorary title, given to the most senior Captain or Fleet Captain in Starfleet. A Brevet Captain is a Commander in field command of a Federation starship.
