| Bonney has wisely concentrated her opera career in smaller European houses and her overdue bow as Ilia at the War Memorial Sunday revealed a smallish, but wonderfully focused instrument. The soprano's wide experience on the song platform (she returns to town May 13-14 for two recitals at the Herbst Theatre) informs her phrasing, her projection of Gianbattista Varesco's libretto, her attacks and her coloring. She invested the Trojan princess in love with Idamante with a pathetic vulnerability that proved most winning. She imparted the poignancy of deracination to "Padre, germani, addio!" She floated a slender, exquisite tone in "Se il padre perdei." And when Bonney turns on the radiance in the celestial "Zeffiretti lusinghieri" at the start of Act III, clouds seem to part. In her first outing at the San Francisco Opera, Austrian soprano K�hmeier as Ilia was sensitive and thoughtful. Her voice had a sparkly quality, with crystalline pianissimos. She also showed a wonderful emotional range./ SFCV |
