SFO History for Baba/ Sellem
The role of Baba is written for a mezzo-soprano, but it was sung in this case by countertenor Brian Asawa, who brought plenty of vigor and temperament to the role. Asawa also sang Baba in a fairly silly version made for Swedish television, that time playing the role as a drag queen. No gender stuff this time, though -- Baba is now unmistakably a woman, and Asawa's performance was both fiery and shapely .. and there were splendid company debuts.. tenor David Cangelosi as the auctioneer Sellem./ Review

Denyce Graves
Denyce Graves stole the show as Baba the Turk. ... Denyce Graves manages to be the bearded woman who looks good in a bathing suit, quite a trick to pull. She sings nasally, with a don't-mess-with-me attitude, faking a mean, bitter spinster voice, for lack of a better way to describe her tone. She totally deadpans her role, and she's hilarious./ Review
