| Puccini wrote about himself that he was a passionate hunter of water birds, texts and women. It is true women, as the main characters, usually play the most important roles in his music dramas. The famous love story about the knight Des Grieux and Manon Lescaut by Abb Prvost preoccupied Puccini in 1889 already. However, his publisher Ricordi was trying to discourage Puccini from setting the theme to music because of the possible competition in Massenetis Manon released in 1884. Puccini did not let stagger himself. Contrarily to the Massenetis French manner with powder and minuets, he wanted to express the subject in an Italian way with desperate passion./ Source |
