Nelle P.

Nelle Pickett was born 21 Mar. 1872.  She was the daughter of Nathan McCree and Henretta Ann Vandevender Pickett from the Lynville, MS area.

Her Grandparents were John and Nancy Billingsley Pickett and William Achors and Mary Nauflett Vandevender from the  West Kemper County, MS area.
Her siblings were:
Sarah Florence, who married Louis A. Land.
William McCree Pickett, who married Annie Rose Whittle.
John Wilbur "Dan", who never Married.
Della Lee, who married Samuel R. Seals.
Sally, who only lived 7 months.
Carrie Leona, who married James A. Jenkins.
Mary Ann (May), who married Hugh Hamilton Peden.

She married Hosea (Hode) William Floore from  the Kellis Store Area. He was the son of William Hosea and Ezilphia Jane Sparkman.  His Grandparents were Ephriam Floore and  an unknown wife and Lewis and Elizabeth Daniel Sparkman from Cooksville, Noxubee County, MS.
Nellie and Hosea  lived on the west side of the road from Gholson, MS.  to Kellis Store.
They had 3 sons:
Jefferson Wilbur, born 1 Dec. 1899,
Hosea McCree, born 31 Dec. 1901,
Sterling  born 22 August, 1904.

In Nov. 1904, her husband Hosea William was struck and killed by a train in Shuqualak, MS. Wanting to stay on the home place, her brother 'Dan' came to live with her.  In 1905 her son Hosea McCree died from colitis and wanting to keep the name Hosea in the family, she addded it to her son Sterling's name, calling him Sterling Hosea.

In 1909 she left Kemper County and moved with her two sons Jeff and Sterling to Shuqualak, MS where she built and started a boarding house and successfully ran same until it burned around 1930. She remaned in Shuqualak until around 1946 when she moved back to Kemper County to live with her son, Jeff.  Around 1950 she returned to Noxubee County and lived in Macon near her son Sterling until her death on November 15, l959. She is buried in Salem Cemetery which is located at Kellis Store, Ms.  She was laid beside her beloved husband 'Hode'  and son McCree.  

Her two sons both married and had children. Jeff married Margaret Steel, born 1 Oct. 1906, the daughter of J Samuel and Pearl Hubbard Steel.  Jeff and Margaret had one daughter Betty Sue.  Jeff was laid to rest at Salem Cemetery next to his brother McCree. He Died in Kemper CO 22 May 1987. Sterling Married Imogene McClure Giles.  She was born 1 Oct 1910 and was the daughter of Thomas Harvey and Lenora Hammock Giles. Sterling and Imogene had three children Madyee Janelle, Nora Joy and Sterling H. Jr.  Sterling Sr. died 12 Feb 1995 and is buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Macon, MS along with his wife Imogene who died on 20 Mar 1970.

Nellie P. as she liked to be called, was the first liberated woman of Kemper and Noxubee Co's. In the mid 1940's she started wearing pants, to the dismay of her friends and sisters.

Even though she was a young woman when her husband died she never remarried. Several years after the loss of her middle son, she continued on with her two surviving sons raising them in Shuqualak, MS and sending both to Mississippi A&M.

When she died on 15 Nov. 1959  she was 87 years old and had been a widow for 55 years.

She was survived by two sons, four grandchildren and two Great grandchildren.  Today those Great grandchildren have increased to eleven, and have given her eighteen Great Great grandchildren.
