(A Battalion of a Lift Cavalry Unit, of which there are 2 in the regiment, is a "cavalry" unit, and unlike regular companies the battalion is called a Squadron.)
HISTORY:
After the Federation first arrived in the Delta Quadrant, Starfleet has been the primary defence force of its citizens. But with the skirmishes and minor hostilities of the various local races and empires, the need of a strong ground unit grew stronger. Built on the Starfleet Marine Corps in the Beta Quadrant, a number of new units were being put together.
At the outbreak of the first Battle of New Terra, most such units were being trained on Zark and Michelob, and those garrison troops stationed on New Terra could not pose any bigger trouble to the invading Ssorans.
With reinforcements from the Beta Quadrant arriving through the wormhole, fresh new equipment and engineering capacity was brought, now came the fighting troops, the 3rd MLCR "Black Watch" regiment.
Having defeated the Ssorans, and with the prospect of an invasion of the Ssoran homeworld itself, the Delta Quadrant Marine Brigade was put up and stationed on New Terra and Starbase Oberon, while the 3rd MLCR "Black Watch" was conducting a manoeuvre on the harsh world of Kate's Star.
When disaster struck, and the Falcarian Confederation launched a pre-emptive attack on New Terra and the space fortress of ODS D2, those surviving units fled onboard civilian skiffs, military transports or went underground to fight a secret war.
Starfleet retreated from most worlds of the former Federation enclave, and found a secret base in the Tortuga system, to rebuild and recuperate. Having regained some strength due to the mineral rich asteroid field around Tortuga, and those Engineers that came to the quadrant to rebuild the space station, the Marines and smaller Starfleet units have begun to see the light of day.
The 3rd MLCR was taking part in the invasion of Atzae Prime, path finders for the more heavy KesRith 23rd Armoured Brigade and the Reich SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" when they pacified the Atzaens.
Pulled back to Tortuga, they are supplied with the brand new London-Class Marine Dropships, capable of lifting an entire Company of Marines with all their equipment, and capable of independently operating as a police action force, or part of a major invasion.
The 1st Squadron (1st & 2nd Companies) are put on alert, while the 2nd Battalion (3rd & 4th Companies are training and rebuilding strength together with the indigenous recruited Delta Quadrant Brigade).
