General Introduction

At first glance the Role of the Counselor is a multifaceted role consisting of Counseling Crew Members, Post Mission Evaluation, Yearly Crew Member Evaluation, Mediator, Cultural Assessments and Evaluation and First Contact. They are also responsible for the Emotional well-being of the entire ship's population. They may be asked to perform periodic and competency crew performance evaluations with the ships XO and/or other Dept. Heads.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Counseling Crew Members
Counseling can range from Job related stressors to Major psychiatric dysfunction and the diagnosis, treatment plan and carrying out of your treatment plan for your client. Some examples of Diagnosis can range from, Job Related Stress, Martial problems, Family problems, Post traumatic stress disorders, ect.

2. Post Mission Evaluation
Just like a CMO will check members of the crew for injuries sustain so does the CNS. If the Mission was peculiarly stressful or if members of the crew had witnessed something traumatic that is when the CNS will step in and evaluate, allowing for the Member to vent and work through what ever may have been distressing during the Mission.

3. Yearly Crew Member Evaluation
This usually takes each year on the date the member was assigned to his ship and post. It will generally fall right in line with the Chief Medical Officer's Physician examination. Areas to be evaluated would be the Crew members job performance and any recommendations to be passed along to the CO.

4. Mediator.
Because of a Counselor training you could also act as a mediator assisting between to crew members as they work out whatever differences they may have. Also you may be asked by the CO to assist in any planetary mediation as the situation arrives.

5. Cultural assessments and evaluation
Depending on the type of away mission, you as the Counselor may be asked to join the away team to make assessments on the psychological aspects and helping others to understand the different cultures, traditions and laws as you deal with the many different races. The goal here is to bridge the gap through communication advising the away team or the CO depending on the situation.

6. First Contact
The primary goal here is to advise the CO and the team as they make first contact. Areas that should be included are, culture, laws, customs anything that pertains to the species you are making first contact with. Strict Starfleet Protocol must be adhered to when making first contact. What is done here and now will either make or break first contact.

7. Competency Evaluations.
At the request of the CO or XO the Role of the counselor in determining the performance competency of a crew member aboard a Starship is to determine their emotional and mental health abilities to perform their duties. Their responsibility in a competency hearing is to act as advisor and expert witness only. This role can be assumed by a Medical Doctor if a CNS is not assigned to the Ship.
(Note: This will only happen in a Sim Plot situation)
