Safer Sex: Taking Care of Yourself and Each Other

(Date: 2003-11-01, 8:44PM - a CL message)

Hello Men on Craig’s List,
Please take a minute to read this, because it could easily be you - on one end or the other.

If you are HIV-Negative
When you meet someone on Craigslist, does knowing/believing someone is poz or neg change the sexual behavior you’re willing to engage in? If someone tells you they are negative, they could be a chronic liar, just be slipping up once, or they may think they’re negative but have become poz without knowing. So whatever they say, if you really care about you – hell, you’re the only one who ultimately will -- you should still play within the risk assessment parameters that you feel comfortable with.

If you are HIV-Positive
Yes, it’s not always easy to be honest about your status. But if someone asks and you don’t tell the truth – even if you intend to only engage in low risk activity – you are not allowing them to decide what to do based on full information. Is having the fun worth it? (Okay so he was really hot, you were really horny… but so what?) Just engaging in oral sex can be a prosecutable misdemeanor. And engaging in unprotected anal (or vaginal) sex without disclosure could be a felony. You do NOT need this!

PS – And if you feel you are frequently engaging in compromising behavior – on either end – contact your local HIV/AIDS organization and see if there is a support group or counselor that will address your needs.
