National Best- 2nd Whats up boys 2002 2000-2001 wins 162 1991-2000 wins 142 Richard Johnson went to the same school as Peter Scudamore, and so far he has endured a similar fate at Aintree as his fellow former Beloment Abby pupil. Scudamore never famously won a grand national. Johnson at 28, has time on his side, and was a narrow runner up on Whats up boys to Bindaree in the 2002 running. It was the first time johnson had completed the national! In the 2000 race, he finished the first circuit and was travelling well before pulling up at the 27th fence on the Henry Daly trained star traveller. A year later, Johnson was again well poised, on the joint favourite Edmond, before falling at the chair- Aintrees tallest fence. Away from the Liverpool course, Johnson has enjoyed greater success, most notably at the Cheltenham festival. A year after winning the Stayers Hurdle on Anzum with one of the best rides of 1999, Johnson claimed the gold cup with Looks Like Trouble. That win earned him a place on the newspaper back pages instead of the front! He has been in the media spotlight for his relationship with princess Anne's daughter, Zara Phillips. Johnson was leading jockey at the 2002 Festival, with his two victories including the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Flagship Uberalles!! |
