Seam Rolls

Rowena__.

greetings all! Are you getting tired of pressing accessories yet? ok, this is the last for now, two different seam rolls. For the first one, I made it really long, Too long for convenient storage but great for pressing my husbands pants! You need:

1--a cardboard fabric tube from the fabric store--they are usually free to anyone who will take them away. Cut to the length of your choice. Mine is the length of the longest seam I generally need to press, which is my husband's outseam measurement.

2--for padding, you need an old, clean wool blanket. A friend once used batting, but it didn't hold up well.

3--heavy muslin for the outer cover--I tried making a split wool/cotton cover, but I didn't do a good job. You can make yours half wool and half cotton if you choose. If you make a long roll like I did, you will probably need the help of a friend!  Roll the tube up tightly in the blanket. In order to get the tightness I wanted, we had to roll, stitch in place, roll, stitch in place, several times to keep it all together.  Roll the covered tube in the muslin, trimming to size with a little overlap.  Turn in the raw edges and stitch in place by hand.  The other seam roll is the one I use most, I got a piece of hard wood handrail from the hardware store and sanded the cut ends smooth. i think i got maple. Do not finish the surface--you don't want varnish being ironed into your clothes!--just leave it unfinished. You can get a plain dowel rod if you want, but the handrail is already flat on one side so it doesn't roll on the table. Mine is about one yard long.
