By: Ben (...What?) The whole Brotherhood was bustling. White robed crowds shifting about. It looked as though a few clouds had crashed through the ceiling and now hovered above our sacred grounds. Not that there were any white clouds anymore. The Brotherhood was built on the outskirts of New York City, out of the reach of a great gray cloud, but still in the shadow of its lesser offspring. We sat in the shadow of society. Yet, we were so high above it. No, thoughts like that didn't matter. Today was THE day. The sacred one's child, supposedly more sacred than he, would be visiting us. Prayer, blessings and the holy water of the untouched crystal springs behind the Brotherhood. No one was the least bit cynnical about how dripping water on the head of a small child could help him become our God any more. Certainly not me. No, I was part of the fallen clouds, I chatted excitedly with my brothers. "Well, Gabriel, about how long now?" The voice broke into my thoughts, and I looked up suddenly. "Hmm?" I said, looking up suddenly, eyes innocent and questioning. The other man, Brother Zachary, smiled slightly at my quizzical look, knowing all too well how whenever I was not speaking, my mind was buzzing with a heavy traffic of thoughts. "I said how long now." I looked to my watch suddenly. I was the only one with a watch. Clunky gold ones on chains broke easily, so all looked to me as the keeper of the time. At least it gave me status. "Any time now." And, on cue, a mass muttering filled the hall as the doors swung open. <~~Back to Stories |
