The Iditarod Trail starts at Trailhead Park right next to the Alaska SeaLife Center. This is where the Seward town founders landed on August 28, 2003. The trail heads north along the magnificent beach. This beach front had up to 12 set of railroad tracks on it until the Good Friday earthquake of 1964 sent them rolling into the ocean. Now it is a superb camping area.

All along the beach are reminders of the 1964 Earthquake. These structures that were also on the beach were destroyed; the Standard Oil dock and tank farm, the San Juan dock and processing plant. The main RV camping location on the beach was the Alaska Railroad marshaling yard before the quake.
