LAP IV: Tragic Love- Romeo and Juliet
Rationale: William Shakespeare is undoubtedly the greatest English playwright of all time. He weaves the great themes of human experience such as sex, power, nature, love, politics, and religion into his histories, comedies, tragedies, and tragicomedies. Shakespeare brings to life his famous and infamous characters through creative variations in plot and beautiful blank verse, which is by turns elegiac and sublime, mundane and poetic, mimetic and fantastic. Through a study of Romeo and Juliet, we will investigate some of Shakespeare’s primary themes and conventions. Finally, it is my earnest desire to impress upon you the importance of this figure in the English literary landscape and to cultivate an appreciation for his mastery of our language.
