![]() |
| Project Mission Statement To create a welcoming and nurturing sense of community which fosters holistic empowerment, pride, and a positive sense of identity among Aboriginal youth in Thunder Bay |
| Goals and Objectives To assist and support Urban Aboriginal Youth to enhance their physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental well being; To provide Urban Aboriginal Youth with a means to be actively involved in finding their own solutions to current issues; To provide youth with opportunities to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to gain meaningful employment and positive self-identity; To provide support for the youth to implement a wide range of activities and approaches to meet the diverse needs of the Aboriginal Youth population of Thunder Bay. |
| Background The members of the 7th Fire Youth Council have been hard at work over the past year putting together a proposal to the Urban Multi-Purpose Aboriginal Youth Centre (UMAYC) Initiative. The proposal has been given final approval and commencement of the project is now under way at the Thunder Bay Indian Friendship Centre. Two Youth Coordinators have been hired to run the day-to-day activities of the program and are working hard to achieve the success that we desire. We hope to provide youth with the opportunity to grow in a balanced lifestyle based on the teachings of the Medicine Wheel and with the chance to learn more of their culture and traditions in a positive setting. It is about youth empowerment and the continuation of our culture and values. |
