Among the
oldest of Shanla myths lies the dream of
Death. Although it has not been spoken of since the last known Shanla
of the Kalb vimte died, its existance remains in the old scriptures.
The dream of death is described as one of the two instances in which a
Shanla dreams. In the dream of death, it is said that Death herself
comes enveloped by a misty cloak, and with a steady hand calls the
Shanla to follow it, and these are powerless to resist its calling.
Some say that Death awaits in the Dreamscape for them, always vigilant,
waiting for another to come her way. There are a few who have tried to
dismythify the character called Death, but as the attempts failed, the
myth persisted. Even so, some insist that the figure that comes to them
as Death is no more than a being of unknown power which would
have been after the Kalb for something that only they had done.
It
was suspected that there might have
been a connection between the dream of death and Aecteri, for
their images seemed to be described as almost identical when
encountered in the place of dreams, that being the most likely
explanation for the
Shanla calling him Deathbringer. In the old tales, though, he was
known as the bringer of life, but that denomination was never used by
the Shanla, only by the Halle.
Despite its unknown origin, the myth of Death
lingers strong, for the Kalb were elliminated, and every Shanla which
dreams of the figure enveloped by mist do not live long.
