Sorry ‘bout the long waits. I’ve been sick and my Dad’s going away for the war overseas and stuff and I’ve had a lot going on lately. I’m trying to get the chapters out faster but something comes up. And then there are times I have the time to do it but I get to where I just want to relax, ya know? So I’ll try a li’l harder, k?

This fic I’m hoping wont be very long. I intended it to be short and to the point, but I can see I may drag it out a little more then what I wanted. Anyways, I hope you enjoy, R&R, thanks again or reading!

Are You My Daddy?

By: Setryochi

Faye carried Spyke’s small body to the door of their small apartment.

“Spyke,” she whispered softly waking the girl in her arms just enough to tell her they were home and she needed her to stand up.

Spyke stood leaning sleepily against the wall as her mother unlocked the door and pushed it open. Spyke silently walked and headed straight to her room. It must have been about nine something at night. She was tired and it showed greatly. Faye watched with a small twinge regret as she watched her daughters retreating form. Closing the door she softly let it click into place before locking it securely behind her.

Faye walked to the kitchen and began to prepare something to eat before she retired for bed.

Spyke lay in bed unable to fall asleep. She had listened to the harsh conversation between Uncle Jet and her mom. She remembered her mom hissing sharply that she didn’t have a father. But her mom never said if he was dead or alive. Maybe he was out there looking for them right now. But Spyke didn’t know because she didn’t even know why he wasn’t there with her now. She stifled a yawn. ‘Maybe I can call Uncle Jet tomorrow, its Saturday so Mom won’t know.’ she thought as she drifted off to sleep.

* *

Faye sat silently at the kitchen bar table. Jet sort of made a point but why should Spyke’s father matter now? He’s not here so why does anybody care? Faye sighed sipping her instant coffee. Spyke did want to know, for sometime she had wanted to know. Always asking questions. Spyke was bound to know sooner or later. But later seems like a better time. Now she’s too young and wouldn’t understand why I had never told her…

The sun shown through the curtains of Spyke’s room making her lidded eyes see red. She opened her eyes and shut them tightly pulling the cover of her face to shield her delicate eyes from the bright sun. She rolled over and started to try and sleep again.

“It’s Saturday!” she sat up quickly.

Spyke jumped out of bed and ran to see if her mom had gone to work yet. She ran straight to the kitchen and found the note on the fridge door.

Spyke,

I’ll be home late tonight. There’s lunchmeat for sandwiches for lunch and I call and check in later.

Love Mom

She smiled happily and strolled out of the kitchen. She walked to her mom and pushed the door open. It creaked as it swung sluggishly to a 40-degree angle with the wall. She marched in and began her search.

Spyke looked in drawers and the closet. In boxes and under the bed. She looked high and low, in and out and came up with nothing. All she wanted was a simple name or picture. Something of the sort. Her mom had to have kept something that reminded her of him. Everyone does that right? It was like that in all sorts of movies Spyke had seen. Wait, a movie! Spyke had also seen a movie where the person kept small papers taped to the bottom of her dresser drawers! Spyke pulled out the top drawer and looked underneath it. There had to be something here somewhere! She pushed the first one in and pulled the second one out, she felt around the rough surface until she felt something cool and smooth. Slowly anticipating the moment she knelt down and looked under finding what she had been hoping to get her hands on. Slowly she pealed the tape away and took the picture. She looked in awe at the picture she held. There was her mom, Uncle Jet, some strange little boy, a dog, and… She gasped!

She looked over the thin lanky man and traced her finger over his figure. She turned the picture over and found names scribbled on the back. Jet, spike, Me, Ed, and Ein she read. She figured that maybe it was written in an order and found that “me” meant her mom and Ein, Ed, or Spike was… Wait… Uncle Jet said something about having a dog once named Ein, and a little girl named Ed, that strange little boy was a girl? Mom and Uncle Jet hung with weird people.

Spyke looked back at the picture and stared at the lanky man with puffy green hair. He and Spyke’s mom seemed to be scowling at each other. Spyke took the picture and closed the drawer, she looked the room over and made sure everything was in place. She walked out ready to get more answers.

Spyke was now dressed, her hair combed and teeth brushed. She wore a gray hoody over her maroon T-shirt and wore faded olive green baggy shorts that went a little below her knees. She slid the picture into her mailbag purse and pulled out her keys. She went outside and locked the door, slipping the keys into her purse she began to walk to the local library.

Spyke stood in front of the copy machine and made two copies of the worn picture. When she was finished she wrote the names of the people on the back of the paper. Slipping the pictures in her purse she walked to the front desk. She signed the small form on the desk claiming a computer for herself. She waited patiently for an occupant to leave before hoping in the chair in front of the TV like screen. She signed onto the Net and began a search for people who lived in Mars. She would search here before moving on to anything bigger.

Sighing she slumped over in her seat. The search had come up that there were a lot of people on Mars named “Spike.” She narrowed it down a little by making the search for male “Spikes”, but it didn’t help much. She printed out the list and began another search for the deceased on Mars. Yet again she comes up with pretty much the same predicament. Spike sighed and decided that searching among the living would be easier. She needed to talk to Uncle Jet to help narrow this long list down a bit. So she signed out of the library computer and started to leave.

Spyke pressed the button to cross the street, looking both ways the crossed as it flashed the green “walk” sign. The streets were busy here and the city was always full of life. Her mother never liked her going out here alone; she always talked about strangers and bad people and how some people were reckless. Spyke walked passed a café and looked on as people sat in the outdoor seating and conversed over their coffees and cappuccinos. She seen a pay phone nearby and another idea hit her. ‘Why didn’t I think of this before?’ She ran to the pay phone and dialed the number to call Uncle Jet.

“Hello?” He picked up.

“Hello? Uncle Jet?”

“Spyke? That you?” he asked, surprised that she had called.

“Yeah, it’s me Uncle Jet. I was just calling to tell you Mom told me about my dad. I just wanted to ask you a question.” she waited for his reaction.

“Is that so? She finally told you, huh?”

“Yeah, she told me his name was Spike and that stuff, but she didn’t tell me his last name. Do you know what his last name is?”

“Uh, what do you need his last name for?”

“I just wanted to know, I would ask Mom but she’s at work and I don’t want to bother her. She seemed upset about telling me what she did tell me.”

“Oh, well, I guess it wouldn’t hurt. It’s Spiegel, kid. His name was Spike Spiegel.” he chuckled.

“Thanks so much Uncle Jet, but I have to go!” She hung the phone up before he could answer with a “goodbye”.

Spyke looked down at the paper in her hands. The names were listed in alphabetical order so she found it right away. She circled the name before really looking at it. She smiled and began to read.

Spiegel, Spike

DOB: unknown

Address: unknown

She read his status and found that everything but his name was unknown about him.

She frowned, “How could this be…?”

She looked around suddenly her attitude had gone from happy to sad. She almost felt like she’d never get any answers. She crumbled the paper up and tossed it in a nearby trashcan. It was useless to her. She looked in her purse to see how much money she had. She found 10 woolongs and decided to get a snack and something to drink.

* *

“What a total waste of time. I still have to get this picture back before Mom gets home. Good thing she’s coming home late tonight.” Spyke sighed as she sipped at her cola. She had finished off her hotdog and still had some of her drink left. She looked around and watched as the people on the passing street went on with their lives. She envied the children who skipped happily in between their parents holding their hands. She watched as the mothers would smile and hug their child before heading in another direction for work. The father would wave goodbye and continue with the child to another destination like school, or maybe day care or even the park. Sometimes the mother would take the child while the father walked in the opposite direction. It wasn’t fair, Spyke never got to do that, and as far as she knew she never would get to either.

Sighing she stood up taking her tray and trash to a garbage can. She dumped the trash and sat the tray on a stack of trays near the trashcan. She started walking in the direction of home. All this walking was making her tired and she still needed to put the picture back. If her mom ever found out she had done that the woman might kill her.

Spyke pressed the crosswalk button ready to make her way across the street. She looked around and the walk signal flashed and she crossed the street safely. When she made it to the other side something had caught her eye. Green fluff had caught her eye!

‘Great, now that I know what he looks like I’m going to think everything that is green and fluffy is him, right?’ Argh! She looked in the direction she had seen it and noticed it wasn’t just fluff, but it was an Afro connected to someone’s head. She looked closer blinking to see if she was seeing things. She held her breath and without realizing it had began walking quickly towards the person. Her eyes widened. The man looked almost exactly like the guy in the picture! His hair seemed to have lighted with gray hairs here and there but it was still that man! The same blue suit too! It seemed like it could have been a coincidence, but who actually wears a suit like that with an Afro THAT messy? He looked older now of course and he sat with his eyes closed in a relaxed sort of position. A cigarette hung from the corner of his lips and the smoke seemed to drift around him making him seem magical or fairly tale like.

Spyke eyes started to water, was this the man her mom was afraid to tell her about? Was this guy the man she had never met but wanted to meet her entire like? Was this the guy that she was half of? She had to know and she had to know now! Spyke walked confidently to the bench he sat at and stopped in front of him.

The man opened one eye feeling her eyes on him. He opened both eyes seeing it was just a small girl. He studied her with her curly purple hair and green eyes. He looked kind of past her for a second, as if remembering something.

“Are you my daddy?” Was the only thing the girl said.

I told you I wasn’t going to make this story a very long one! I warned you! Anyways, I hope you liked this chapter. I’m glad I could finish it. And sorry for chapter 2!! There was a big mistake at the end of that one. I thought I had saved the finished product but it turns out that I’m such a ditz and I was in such a hurry I didn’t save it and I didn’t check it and I posted it unfinished. Now there wasn’t much there so you didn’t miss out on anything special. But I just wanted to apologized for my mistake and I think maybe one day when I’m not lazy I’ll go and revised it and fix it, but for now I’m focusing on a lot of other things and probably won’t have the time for it. I hope you enjoyed this chapter and I really wanna hear from you and I want to know what you think! Thank you to those of you who have already reviewed, I love you guys (‘specially Ringo.) And I also wanna thank the people in advance who hopefully will review! Thanks! Get the next chapter out as soon as I can!
