| Seth B. Draper 10 October, 2004 Great Expectations Charles Dickens Dodd, Mead & Company, Inc. 1942 598 A. 1. Despair and happiness in material items is the major concept in this book. Dickens goes into great detail examining what makes a person not only happy but content in life; the idea that one is able to live their life and say I am happy with what I have and need nothing more. What makes it so hard for people to be joyous with their lot in life is that there exist material things that we naturally pursue. It is in this pursuit, though, that any exuberance of life may disappear. |
