Da Niao
When you see him you would think: "Its Big Bird. But doesnt he live in America?"

All arround the world, different countries have produced their own versions of Sesame Street. They all pretty much have a big Muppet character, but no one was aloud to have Big Bird. But China insisted one having Big Bird due to his popularity after the special `Big Bird in China. This adventure started already in 1982, when a U.S.A. team was allowed to film a 75- minute special in which Big Bird traveled through China in search of a phoenix.
That adventure was shown both in the U.S.A. and, in a dubbed version, in China!
So Carrol Spiney and Kevin Clash flew over to cast someone to play Da Niao, the Chineze Big Bird.
The residents from Zhima Jie does many of the usual Sesamestreet activities, teaching numbers for instance. But instead the alphabet they teach the origin and meaning of Chinese characters.
They explain the history and costums of certain festivals. They describe certain ancient art forms and they teach sharing and cooperation....
After having to narrow it down to 4 good performers, Carroll chose Mien Mien to play Da Niao. A gentle young man who still works as a truck mechanic.
In Carrolls, Mien Mien had what it took for Da Niao to be the one that the young Chineze could relate with.

The other characters are all Chinese: a lively three-year-old red monster called Little Plum (Xiao Mei Zi), a furry blue pig called Puffing Pig (Hu Hu Zhu), a kindly grandfather, a verry sweet mother and a little boy called An An.
Zhima Jie is a busy Chinese neighborhood with a noodle shop, public phone booth, bicycle repair stand and a admirable, if atypical, recycling center....
Zhima Jie aired in China from 1998-2001 om Shanghai Television (STV)
