He�s Big Birds Cousin, in fact Big bird was once seen talking to him on the telephone. Abelardo has even made a couple of appearances in Sesame Street Magazine.
He is a familiar face with Mexican childeren on tv along with his Plaza Sesamo pals; Lola (a little pink monsterand his best friend), Pancho (a big blue monster, who has a pet elephant like Oscar).
Abelardo thinks and reacts like a preschool boy. He is a warm and loveble bird, it�s anxiety by learning is his basic motivation. And although he is very big, with childish behaviour, he is very tender.
He is a happy bird with a great deal of imagination and an enthusiastic singer.
His intrests are skating, riding his tricicle, learning numbers and letters, stories, to resolve problems, to sing, dance and to do exercises.
That all changed in the 80�s.
The characters changed and they introduced the Parrot Montoya and the Grouch Bodoque.
He looked like Pancho, but was brown like coffee.
Since the beginning arround 1981 Alberto Estrella played his voice, head and left hand.
While, like Big Bird, the right hand is operated by a piece of marionette string. Which is connected from that hand, to the left hand.
After they deside to remake Parrot Montoya, they changed his looks more colourful, gave him the name Abelardo Montoya and trade Bodoque in for two more colourful monsters.
Unstead of the typical Mexican village, it became a very modern and coloured Latin- American street.

Also the numbers of songs was increased, since the childeren of the new generation are more oriented towards music.
In 1998 they introduced the fourth character.
