The "25 minute gentle" description of the walk-in is the worst I’ve ever been sandbagged!! It's worse than anything at Nowra!! I mean, we weren't going at lightning speed but we kept up a head of steam and only stopped for 2 brief swigs of water, and it took us (wait for it) 1 hour and 10 minutes of bloody hard slog to get to Epaminondas!!! Its also easily the most bloody irritating track I've ever been on - it wanders all over the bloody mountain side, sometimes you wonder if its even going where you want to go or not!! It zigzags back and forth, at some points you'll walk for 200m+ across the hillside and not gain any height or even losing height, at others it forces you directly uphill for 50m then horizontal again - its just idiotic!!
Anyway, its a good crag for sure, but it would be sensible to allow 45 mins.
** Epaminondas 100m 10 (OS)
Marked, in the centre of the major buttress 100m R of the walk up. 1) 40m 10 Very pleasant. Good gear, great steep climbing for 20m, then 20m more easily up flake. Sling horn and small wires for belay. 2) 45m 10 Wander 6m R, lovely exposure, then up easy crack to overhang. Damn hard move round overhang - more like 15! Nice corner crack and steep face on left to big chimney. 3) 15m Chimney through the massive summit overhangs to the top. Pitches 2 and 3 can be combined with a 60m rope by placing high gear to protect the initial 6m traverse then running it out across and up until the overhang.
Getting off the top of the route is almost as bad as the walk in - numerous 6m upclimbs and downclimbs through big rockgardens.
To see what this crag looks like, have a look at my photos .
