Fire Wall

The Word: A good crag, with a standout beginner's classic.
The Crag Classics: Groove Tube (*** 6a/16)
Sun/shade: South facing, it gets shade from March to Oct, and sun otherwise.
Wet weather options: Not really, it gets a bit inconvenient in the wet. The 80m scramble up from the beach gets horrendously muddy and stays treacherous for a day after rain. The base also gets unpleasantly muddy. Some routes will be subject to seepage.
Grades: 6a-8a (16-29)

The Details: You'll be drawn here by Groove Tube, but this crag also offers about a dozen other good quality routes.

Access: 3min from Ton Sai, 15min from Raylae East. Walk N along Ton Sai beach to the end. At the high tide mark a track plunges straight uphill to the crag - take extreme care with the scrambles up the rocky sections due to the terribly slippery mud. Bring a mat to put your gear on.

Viewed from Dum's Kitchen on Ton Sai beach - Fire Wall is the centre of the three walls in the background, on the left is Melting Wall, on the right is Monitor Wall, and Ton Sai crag is on the beach in the foreground.

Fire Starter (*** 16m 6c+/24) (TR)
This route totally spanked me. Bloody hard!! Outstanding moves, pity about the bolts though. The left strand of my rope is on it in the shot below.

White Hut Hernias (** 16m 6b+/21) (OS)
Definitely worth a star or two. Starts with some challenging tufa moves up a stalactite, then swings onto the main face for some nice steep moves. The right strand of my rope is on it in the shot below.

Fire Starter & White Hut Hernias - note my rope on them both.
Steep

Groove Tube (*** 25m 6a/16) (OS)
Very soft for the grade but a classic nevertheless. Crank over the undercut start (apparently some people go up through the hole!), then up past regular slings into "the tube" which offers great 3D stemming. A nice juggy overhang finishes it off.
Groove Tube - Nic flashing it.
