Anyway, I shall print up my report shortly after I see them, on April 14th, and hopefully have some pictures to show the world too! April 1998
Well, what can I say, I have almost been left speechless after their astounding performance, I can say that it was one of the best nights of my life ever, and I mean that.
THE SONGS
All the favourites were masterfully done, plus a few others you wouldn't quite excpect, including a great duet by the 2 Mels, "Sisters are doin' it for themselves".
They opened with 'If you can't dance', which wasn't a favourite of mine, but they did it justice and had the dance moves perfected. Also in the first part of the show the girls sang all these tunes: 'Who do you think you are?', 'Do It', 'Denying', 'Move Over', 'The Lady is a Vamp', nad my personal favourite of the show, 'Too Much'. (see ***)
There was a 30 minute interval after 'Move Over' which seemed to last for days, then they were back for more. Each song was sung to perfection, not even the so called "talentless" spice girl missed a note or was off key. Astounding! This part of the show was really exciting, not knowing what was to come next, or what the next oufit Victoria would be wearing. They did 'Say you'll be there', 'Stop', 'Wannabe', 'Spice Up Your Life', and had a great solo from Emma, and a few unexpected covers too. The mood went soft for '2 Become 1' and 'Naked'.
The encore was terrific, everyone sand along to 'Mama' and eyes went glazed as they sang a moving 'Viva Forever', and the last Spice Girls track filled the fans with the biggest urge to stand on their seats and dance their hearts out, 'Never Give Up On The Good Times'. The show finished with a brilliant rendition of Sister Sledge's great track 'We are Family', with crowd singing along with their 5 beautiful idols.
The spaceship took off and the best concert in history was over.
MY FAVOURITES
'Too Much'***
This for me was the highlight of the concert, seeing Melanie up there, commanding her band, singing a song which she wrote, in front of thousands of adoring people. The power was in her voice and the emotion was in her eyes, it was a fine moment. The other Spice Girls could feel it too, this is Mel's song, she puts every feeling into it, staring to the heavens as her voice puts me there. She was awesome. So awesome in fact, that I, SpiceGem, did cry at this particular part of the concert, the emotion took over me completely. And as the song ended, and I dried my eyes the camera was showing Melanie on the large TV screens, and maybe I was mistaken, but I think she had tears in her eyes also. For me it was definately Too Much.
'Naked'
Anyone who has seen the 'Live in Istanbul' video will know the routine for this song. Those five beautiful bodies, bare, with only five chairs to hide what millions of people dream of. And they sung the song, Melanie again was outstanding in the middle bit. Everything went quiet and the band had stopped, then 5 drum beats and Melanie's sweet voice filled the Arena with such feeling. Her great solo, and she excelled.
'Viva Forever'
Apart from the terrific 'Too Much', this was the best song that night. The five girls gave it their all and really got into the song, captivating the audience the whole way through. One by one the girls left the stage as they stopped singing, leaving only Mel B to sing the alto part, and Melanie C to sing high. Everybody was marveling at the two as they held the last note for seconds. Then when the song was over, they went to each other and opened their arms, and hugged, like the moment really meant something in their life. This touch really left an impact on me.
ONE THING WENT WRONG
Just a minor detail in 'Move Over'. Melanie was really getting into it and she was violently head-banging, then unfortunately, her hairpiece came flying off, and the long red streak was gone.
SOMETHING KINDA FUNNY
For me, the Spice Boys just didn't work. Yes, perhaps a nice touch to dance alongside the girls and take the pressure of them, but for me, one song was enough with them in it, stealing the limelight. I thought they were overused, and in my oppinion they were a waste. It's not Girl Power, nor the style of the Spice Girls too include these males as objects of desire. Ditch the guys, a perfect show.
