Tolerance
There is no doubt, that society has little tolerance for subjects that it has deemed to stand on the
outside of "mainstream" thinking. While there are certainly topics that most all would agree to be
unacceptable, when it comes to the issues such as race, religion, sexual orientation or lifestyle, a vast
spectrum of different opinions surface. While many expect their beliefs to be respected, they fail
miserably when asked to respect the beliefs of others. It is often the case when addressing issues
such as these, that those who voice their opposition the loudest, are in fact ignorant about the issue
they challenge.
It is, however, apparent that being ignorant is a choice these individuals have made for themselves.
One need only look around to see that new avenues of education are appearing at a phenomenal rate.
Through radio and television, newspapers and books, and now the presence of the computer, we have
the world at our fingertips. While many people embrace these forums and explore topics deemed
"taboo", they do so with the knowledge that they risk nothing. They are protected by a certain degree
of anonymity. They are able to maintain their outward apperance and remain safe in the arms of society,
accepted for standing level with the rest of the crowd. While many would suggest that the fact these
individuals are becoming more aware, they don't realize that this awareness is of little value. While
individuals may have a clearer picture of certain issues, they remain silent. Why is this? Perhaps the
fear of standing out in the crowd is so great that regardless of their understanding, they cannot cope
with the idea of standing alone or being labeled as sympathetic. Is it not easier to remain a follower
and wear the same mask as everyone else? There's no fear of being recognized in a crowd, your
identity is lost in a sea of faces. But, in this crowd are you able to find yourself?
If one reflects through the history of mankind, those who stood up for their beliefs and spoke of their
understandings are hailed by many as heros. These individuals have brought to the table society
intolerance. They challenged it and in the end, reduced it to nothing more than a pile of rubble.
Just how did they slay this horrible beast? Did they use a sword to subdue the fear and hate? Their
weapon of choice had an edge, but presented itself in the form of understanding and awareness.
While the spoke of their beliefs, they were also able to step "out of their box" and recognize the
differences around them.
Given this, cannot each one of us be our own hero? Rise to the challenge and instead of standing in
judgement, educate ourselves and speak freely of that which we now understand? We may not choose
to walk the paths that we've learned of but should be able to acknowledge those who are different, and
accord them respect. Afterall, the respect you give, will inturn allow you to be respected and the value
of such a that is priceless. The power of acceptance and tolerance gives the strength needed to stand
steadfast against those who may attack you. You begin rise in the crowd and soon see that you
are not alone, as their are others that have attained the same understanding as you but everyone here
has proven they are not just another face in the crowd.
