Jason's poetry - The edge of the sea

The edge of the sea

staring introspectively at the edge of the sea
a cerulean mist washes over me
gazing down with pierced precision
I try to rationalize your final decision
the reasons behind that fateful night
you ascended like an angel in flight

you asked if we could take a drive to the coast
that was the place you said you loved the most
I should have sensed by the tone of your voice
that night was different, you had made a choice

we drove to the beach and you took my hand
I followed you running barefoot in the sand
we talked, reminiscing until the fall of night
two silhouettes dancing in the pale moonlight

you asked if I believed in love
I said it wasnt something I often thought of
you asked if I dreamt about dying
I said no, but you could tell I was lying
you told me happiness was beyond your reach
an inpenetrable fortress you couldnt breach

we climbed atop the cliff at the edge of the sea
you told me this was the only time you ever felt free
I looked at the waves crashing on the rocks below
the incandescent moon on the water cast a shimmering glow
the beauty of the moment was soon lost however
when you told me hopelessness lasts forever

you said you needed some time to be alone
I never should have left you but how could I have known?
I waited for you by the side of the lane
I didnt realize you were in so much pain

but your sorrow called you to the edge of the sea
you removed your clothes and yelled goodbye to me
I turned in time to witness your final moment
a selfish act to end your torment
with arms outstretched in crucified motion
you leapt off the cliff and dove into the ocean

I watched your body disappear into the torrents of green
I waited hours for you, but you were never again seen
after awhile I accepted the fact that you were dead
I should have listened to everything you said
what made you feel so desperate and lost?
you finally found your peace, but look at the cost
