"Street Talk" this week posed these questions to six persons at the Galesburg Public Library, 40 E. Simmons St.:
"At its next meeting, the Galesburg City Council will be asked to approve an amendment to the city's human relations ordinance that would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. is this amendment a good idea? Why or why not?"
Rose Hammerlund, Galesburg: "Yes, but I think it's already taken care of under the Constitution. I really believe the Constitution already covers that."
Jeppie Harris, Galesburg: "Sounds like a good idea to me. People shouldn't be discriminated against for any reason."
Karon Myler, Galesburg: "Yes, they ought to (approve it). I'm not for them (gay people) and I'm not against them. I don't judge them. I think they should have rights too, just like everybody else. I've felt this way for a long time."
Joyce Smith, Galesburg: "Yes. They shouldn't be allowed to discriminate against anyone based on race or religion or anything."
Joyce Walters, Galesburg: "Yes, because I don't think anyone should be discriminated against for any reason. I think it's a shame the City Council is the one that has to do it. I don't think the City Council should have to decide. I think we should be the ones (to not discriminate voluntarily)."
Marti Lincoln, Avon: "I definitely think it's necessary, if everything has to be put into words. It's too bad that things have to come to that point that you have to legislate everything (to prevent discrimination). But if that's what it takes, then I support it."
