Sam's Businessverse

What I do for a living:
First and foremost, I am semi retired and own and operate a small Financial and Other Services side business. This keeps me busy when I am at home, and allows me flexibility with my schedule for traveling and meeting people from other States and Canada in my free time.
Financial Services:
Accounting & Bookkeeping:
Expertise in Individual and Small Business Income Tax (Federal, Multi-State
and Local Returns) including Farmers. Extensive knowledge of Payroll
and Payroll Taxes (20 years experience in Corporate Accounting, Small Business
and Personal Accounting). Involved in Accounts Receivable and Collections
for a sharing plan native to Lancaster County only. Full charge Bookkeeping
and Accounting knowledge, to include Fixed Assets, Depreciation,
Accounts Payable, Budgeting,
Managing Cash & Credit Accounts and Financial Planning. I'm sure
there is more, I've done it all in my 20 years. Let's just say I
have a FLAIR for figures, which if you read it right has a double meaning.
Other noteworthy experience is Bank Reconciliation's, implementing Manual
Controls for Balancing purposes, utilization of various business machines
chief being of course the COMPUTER!!!
What I would like to do:
I just love PC's, and can do just about anything with the most up-to-date software. I have no real experience or interest in making hardware changes, but I love working with software configurations, being creative, creating web pages, creating my own wave files and eventually want to make AVI and MPEG files. My dream is to become a Web Page Designer, with expertise in html and java. I would like to work from my home and for myself doing this. I have no desire to work for someone else unless I could Telecommute. I would also love to become more involved with PC's by helping those who need PC's but do not know how to use them. I love sharing my knowledge with others. If only there was a way to make some money doing it. I have no experience with MAC or Apple Computers, but would love to learn how to use them. I also am curious how they compare to the PC, which is what I have been using since the inception of PC's in the workplace.
Where I've Been:
I have worked for many Companies in my 20 years. The first company I worked for as a Senior Payroll Specialist was Norcross, Inc. which was a Greeting Card Company located in West Chester, PA. Soon after Norcross merged with Rust Craft (another Greeting Card Company), but it proved to be a bad move as the Company eventually filed for Bankruptcy and faded away. Norcross was a great place to work because the management above me were really cool. It was like a network of buddies (3 of them), and between them they kept everyone happy. My co-workers were not so great unfortunately, except one, who I would later work with in another Company. After my layoff from Norcross-Rust Craft, I was a TEMP at West Chester School District for about three (3) months. During that time, I started my own side business and continued to work in the Corporate World. An interesting thing happened after I left Norcross, the management team I mentioned earlier teamed up with the Controller and were all hired at Warner AMEX Cable in Rockafeller Plaza in Manhattan NYC. This Company was part of Warner Brothers. This became an opportunity for me as my former boss at Norcross & his two buddies remembered me and chose me to work as a Payroll Specialist for Warner AMEX (Warner Brothers and American Express) which later was called Warner Cable. This was the most fun I ever had working for someone else. Me, and a number of other very fortunate people got to live in Manhattan with an almost unlimited expense account and live in a nice Hotel, going home on the weekends. I had allot of fun learning the job and meeting all the people I would be working with for a 5 month period. I experienced some of the finest food in NYC, with no worry about money. A group of the fun people had plans to go somewhere almost every night. I wasn't as adventurous as they were, because I was more interested in learning the job. We were slated to move the entire Accounting functions to Blue Bell, PA after the 5 months was up. And, we were actually being trained by the people we were going to replace. There was some tension at times, but because of the friendships of the three guys from Norcross, and the Accounting head in NYC, we all eventually became friends and there were no hard feelings after awhile. The employees that were going to be replaced eventually realized that it wasn't our fault. It was just another Corporate restructuring, which was becoming all too common at the time. We eventually moved, and settled in back in PA. Unfortunately, it was only 13 months before we found out that Corporate Headquarters was relocating to Ohio. Very few of us had the option of relocating, and I didn't want to go anyway. I was offered a Stay Bonus and stayed until I got a job with Burroghs which later merged with Sperry-Rand and became UNISYS. I worked for UNISYS until 1993, and was laid off due to a reorganization. I decided I had enough of the Corporate BS, and have been working on my own since then. Other things I had done during these times was work two full time jobs as a Program Worker for MH clients in Group Homes (sometimes I felt like I should be a client, instead of a worker). I ran a Taxi Cab Service for the Amish here in Lancaster County for a period of three years as well. I've had quite a life in the Corporate world, and was never sure if I could deal with all the uncertainties of reorganizations, etc. I am happy to say, I am free of that now, Thank GOD!!!
Where I am going:
Where ever I go, I am sure it will be an experience. My dreams to find a nitch in the work world is uncertain. But no matter what I do, work will always take a back seat to having some happiness in my life. I lived in fear for 40 years of my life (ask me about it sometime), and I have made up my mind that the rest of my life will be heading towards happiness. Check out my personal side, and see where I am going there. Hope to see you there!!!
