To quote the Grateful Dead: "What a long strange trip it's been." It has only been three years since I discovered (or realized) I am gay. Looking back now (with 20/20 hindsight) it should have been obvious, but I either was too dense to realize it or kept it buried in my subconscious.
Three years later and how things have changed! I am in a loving relationship with Steve (aka MrGoodBear), enjoy numerous friendships with other gay men/couples, and met many others thru Bear Pride 96 & 97 in Chicago and HiBearNation 96 in St Louis.
A Little Bio
I was born June 9, 1953 in Alton, IL (about 30 miles N of St Louis, MO). They tell me I was the terror of the neighborhood before age 3 (I don't remember) until one of the kids decided to put an end to it & walloped me good. I retreated into a shell until kindergarden.
Once I started school, I opened up once again, though I was still somewhat shy. Many of my friendships were with the girls (not all), because they accepted me, when the boys mostly did not. I always remember feeling different from most of the other kids, not an uncommon feeling among gays growing up.
I had a few male friends, though only one or two were particularly close. One saved me from drowning at a beach during the second grade. Another I befriended in the fifth grade when he was the "new kid" in class. (During my 25 year high school reunion, he came up & thanked me - you could've knocked me over with a feather!)
During this time I had my tonsils removed, and, like many I that do, I began to put on weight. I was never extremely obese, but was still fairly chubby. For some reason it never really bothered me. I was teased about it, but when I didn't respond badly to the teasing, the kidding & teasing stopped.
Still, life went on. Then, when I wasn't looking, puberty hit. I suddenly started growing hair & my voice dropped. During Scout camp one summer I learned about masterbating, so my sexual experience began. Back then I should have realized that I was gay (and a bear & chub lover) due to one event that sticks in my mind - Some friends & I had just gotten out of the movies, waiting for our rides. Someone's dad was there to pick up his kid - he has a huge belly and a furry chest. I have no idea why this guy caught my eye, but he did. Since then I have been fascinated with big men (though not in a sexual way - until a few years ago).

What I Like
Obviously, I like men - particularly those men called bears and cubs, and even more if they have a belly on them. But there is more to life than just men.
I love to read: anything from comic books to tomes on philosophy. Science fiction and fantasy have been my favorites, especially Herbert, Heinlein, McCaffrey, Eddings, Tolkien. Lately I have been reading a number of "gay" books: Maupin's Tales series along with a lot of gay bios & history. That's just the tip of the iceberg!
I enjoy all types of music: country, blues, bluegrass, jazz, rock (& all its permutations), alternative, dance, techno, reggae, even some rap & hip-hop. Current artists I've been listening to: Lauren Hill, Joni Mitchell, Smashing Pumpkins, Cornershop, Lucinda Williams and many more.
